This project was inspired by a painting which was purchased by the Harn Museum of Art for the permanent collection. 4th graders went on a field trip to the Harn to see "The Dogon Couple" original and were blown away! The trip was funded through a Foundation for Success grant that Ms. Lindquist was awarded this year.

Here is Roderick with a drawing of himself as the Ingres' portrait of Napoleon I on His Imperial Throne, painted in 1806.

David did his self-portrait after Eugene Delacroix's portrait of Baron Schwiter painted in 1827.

Art Club Celebration!

We just had our last art club session which once again ended with the now famous "Edible Art" project. Ebbets took the photo on September 29, 1932, and it appeared in the New York Herald Tribune in its Sunday photo supplement on October 2. Taken on the 69th floor of the GE Building during the last several months of construction, the photo Resting on a Girder shows the same workers napping on the beam.

Migrant Mother (1936), Dorothea Lange
For many, this picture of Florence Owens Thompson (age 32) represents the Great Depression. She was the mother of 7 and she struggled to survive with her kids catching birds and picking fruits. Dorothea Lange took the picture after Florence sold her tent to buy good for her children. She made the first page of major newspapers all over the country and changed people’s conception about migrants.

Surrealist Photography

4th graders are preparing for their field trip to the Harn Museum of Art. Central to all the selected photographs is a concern for identity. In some cases subjects are treated with specificity as unique individuals while in other cases identity is addressed in more general terms through idealized perfection or association with broad cultural groups. The installation includes portraits of renowned figures such as Pablo Picasso, James Joyce and Mikhail Baryshnikov as well as portraits of anonymous individuals such as Irving Penn’s image of two Nepalese women and Edward Curtis’s image of a Native American woman. For the latter examples, details of costume and dress provide clues to the sitters’ identities. The exhibition also addresses concepts of the nude and the naked by juxtaposing idealized images of the human form (such as Ruth Bernhard’s Classic Torso) with images of figures in various stages of undress by Steven Meisel and Anne Noggle. These themes are further explored in portraits and nudes by famed photographer Andy Warhol. The exhibition is made possible by the Sidney Knight Endowment.

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; Rema Hort Mann Foundation Grant
Artist-in-Residence Program, Studio Museum in Harlem, NYC

Like the hero of a children’s story, painter Kehinde Wiley grew up as one of six siblings raised with more love than money by a single mom who was an antiques dealer in South Central Los Angeles. His father, who works in architecture, was from Nigeria, and had left Wiley’s mom before he was born. At age 20, Wiley, then studying art in San Francisco, set out for that country’s largest city, Lagos, to find his dad—which he did, remarkably, by asking around. After about a month in Africa, Wiley returned to the U.S., where he started a series of portraits based on his father. That career has been going great guns since the spring of 2001, when Wiley, who had just earned his M.F.A. from Yale, moved to New York to participate in the Studio Museum’s residency program. Over the rest of that year, he began to choose his subjects from what he has called the “runway” of 125th Street. By granting them the ceremonial trappings of the historically rich and famous, he cast himself as the court painter of urban life. In 2005, that role became more literal when VH1 tapped him to immortalize such members of hip-hop royalty as LL Cool J, Ice-T and Biggie Smalls for an campaign advertising that year’s VH1 Hip-Hop Honors show. Ice-T said, ‘If anyone deserves to be Napoleon, it’s me.’ Accordingly, the rapper and Law & Order SVU star appears in a pastiche of Ingres’s 1806 coronation portrait of the French emperor, complete with golden throne and scepters.
To view all the VH1 paintings go to >>>
http://www.vh1.com/shows/events/hip_hop_honors/2005/art.jhtml

Kehinde Wiley, Dogon Couple, 2007
From " The World Stage" series
Purchased by and on exhibit at the Samuel P. Art Club is fully enrolled with only 2 scholarship positions remaining available. (Scholarships are reserved exclusively for free/reduced lunch students)
The early registration during Open House showed overwhelming interest in extended art enrichment opportunities. For anyone who was interested in Art Club but did not get in for this semester, remember that a new session will begin following the winter holidays.

It was great seeing everyone last night. It was the largest attendance for Open House I have seen at Williams in the 20 years I have been working here.

You can download and print a copy of the Art Club permission slip. It is still a great idea to be on the waiting list. For a variety of reasons positions open-up throughout the year and I will invite those on the waiting list to join if they are still interested.

Art Club Registration & Permission Slip
http://docs.google.com/View?id=dgb56dvr_18dzv2xrn4

Day 1 of the 2009 - 2010 school year!

Thank you again to the voters of this community who chose to help fund full-service arts programming in the elementary schools! Second through fifth graders began the year with lessons on reading the credit line (the information that accompanies a piece of art). They learned how to identify the artist, the artist’s nationality, date of production, title of piece, medium and size. They learned the various mediums artists use for visual creative expression and practiced analyzing pieces from a variety of perspectives.
First through fifth graders all recently completed “Name Plate” designs. They learned basic graphic design principles of spacing, balance, symmetry, positive/negative space and warm and cool colors. Completed pieces are on exhibit in the art building foyer gallery. Kindergarteners are now completing self-portrait paintings – to be on display soon.
New projects are beginning this week.
First grade – “People in Action”
Second Grade – “Amate Bark Paintings”
Third Grade – “Georgia O’Keefe Flowers”
Fourth Grade – “Mona Lisa/American Gothic Parodies”
Fifth Grade – “City Street - Linear Perspective”

Keep up the good work!

Summer Update

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer vacation.
I just developed some end of the year photos and wanted to share this one . . .

Samuel, Deanna and Ja'Mese are 3 creative and cool kindergarteners, as you can tell.

I know you have seen the news of the funding cuts to the art and music programs in our county for next school year. Many of our students will have art work on display in the children's art tent. Mr. Thomas and his band will be performing some wonderful Jazz. And very thrilling to me, is that 8 Highwaymen will be exhibiting! The Highwaymen were a group of young African American artists from Ft. Pierce who painted Florida landscapes and sold them of the side of the roads in the early 60s. There work hangs in the Governors office and is sought after by art collectors everywhere. This is the first time that this many from the group will be together since they were conducted in the Florida Artists Hall of Fame (floridahighwaymen.com)

To know more about the festival visit jfestcentral.com

Science Fair

The Science Fair was a big success. Legend has it while standing on the balcony of Galveston’s Ashton Villa, Granger read the contents of “General Order No. 3”
The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.[6]
That day has since become known as Juneteenth, a name derived from a portmanteau of the words June and nineteenth.

Go to Gainesville's JFest website to know it all -

http://www.cce.ufl.edu/JFest/index.html

Carnival, 4th Grade DVD cover designs & news

Good news:
The Williams Annual School Carnival and Spring Arts show is this Friday the 25th.
