5th grade self-portraits

Fifth graders studied famous portrait paintings and caricature cartoons. They used their knowledge of facial porportions and exageration to create their own self-portrait picture.

Foundation for Schools grant awarded!

5th graders will be taking a field trip to the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Artto see the recent acquisition of one of Kehinde Wiley's oil paintings. http://www.harn.ufl.edu/

The students will also be creating an original piece of art in the style of Wiley based on a unit of study.

Art Club Registration

Wow! Art Club is fully enrolled with only 2 scholarship positions remaining available. (Scholarships are reserved exclusively for free/reduced lunch students)
The early registration during Open House showed overwhelming interest in extended art enrichment opportunities. For anyone who was interested in Art Club but did not get in for this semester, remember that a new session will begin following the winter holidays.

It was great seeing everyone last night. It was the largest attendance for Open House I have seen at Williams in the 20 years I have been working here.

You can download and print a copy of the Art Club permission slip. It is still a great idea to be on the waiting list. For a variety of reasons positions open-up throughout the year and I will invite those on the waiting list to join if they are still interested.

Day 1 of the 2009 - 2010 school year!

Thank you again to the voters of this community who chose to help fund full-service arts programming in the elementary schools! I wish I could have filmed the surprised and delighted reactions from the kids when they saw me on campus that first day. It was beyond heartwarming to witness how much they appreciated having art class in school.

To start off with . . .

Kindergarten - First grade are beginning the year learning basic techniques with clay.

2nd - 5th grade is learning how to read the credit line and analyze art works from a variety of perspectives

In response to the many inquiries I've received in regards to Art Club . . .
YES, there will be an Art Club this year!
Once our enrollment and schedules have stabilized we will pick dates and times to hold sessions. The first club meeting will be just after Labor Day.
Check backpacks for further information.

I'm Back!

It was wonderful teaching art to students at Idylwild Elementary school this past semester. I will miss them. They are excited to have their original art teacher back in the fall the same way that I am excited to be back home here at Williams. Thought I would throw out this miny-movie clip from of "art in action".

First graders painting with watercolor.

A semester of Art programming is coming to an end

. . . the good news is your going to be getting a music program now! I will begin providing art instruction to the students at Idylwild Elementary and the music teacher there will be coming to Williams to provide you with music instruction. Please give a warm Wildcat welcome to Ms. Lou Hyatt when she arrives on January 20.

Keep up the good work. You have been incredible with a fast pace in the art room this year. We have accomplished a lot. Truly a team effort. It has been a joy.
